This year onwards, students opting for diploma in Agriculture will be able to directly take admission to the second year of the four-year degree course after completing the diploma.
The Maharashtra Council for Agriculture Education and Research (MCAER),which took the decision recently, has also extended the diploma course period from the earlier two years to three years. Students can take admission to the diploma course after passing class X.
According to MCAER officials, the two-year diploma course was losing popularity among students owing to limited opportunities available to them.
MCAER had passed a resolution to change the duration of the course and the decision was pending with the Department of Agriculture that recently gave its nod. The course will be in semi English language.
There is similar course for engineering students which is very popular among students. Now,students who decide to go for graduation in agriculture will not have to study class XI and XII. This decision will open new doors of opportunity, said Tukaram More,Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth.
