Bollywood actor Sonali Kulkarni Sunday inaugurated the Dr Narendra Dabholkar Lokvidyapeeth, a “People’s University” in digital space, aimed at training the masses in identifying fake godmen and spreading a scientific approach.

Noted academic Dr Suhash Palshikar was also present at the inaugural function organised in Pune by the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (ANIS), which was founded by Dabholkar. Anti-superstition activist Dabholkar was shot dead on August 20, 2013.

In her speech, Kulkarni made mention of a recent case in which a Pune-based IT professional, who returned after working in the UK, was duped of Rs 14 crore by three individuals, including a woman who claimed that the spirit of a godman entered her body and that she could cure his ailing daughters.

Having associated with Dabholkar and ANIS for several years, Kulkarni said she would spread information about the Dr Narendra Dabholkar Lokvidyapeeth, which offers six online courses on issues like god and ghost possession of the human body, misleading ‘Vastushastra’, pseudoscience and de-addiction.

Anybody over 13 years can apply for these courses available free of cost on http://www.anisvidya.org.in. An online examination would be conducted, and those clearing it would get certificates signed by author Achyut Godbole.

Palshikar appreciated the “People’s University”, saying it is being launched at a time when the situation is adverse in society. Palshikar also hinted that the initiative may face obstruction from certain sections.

During the event, English editions of a set of 10 books written by Dabholkar were released in the presence of Professor Rahee Dahake, who did the translation.
