Her mother died when she was in Class X and her father is mentally retarded. With her three sisters already married, there was no one to look after her. But this girl from a small village,Bhenda in Nevasa taluka in Ahmednagar district, did not allow all this to weigh her down.

Keeping alive the wishes of her mother who wanted her to study further,Sarla Borude came to Pune and joined Mahilashram Junior College to fulfil a dream. She pursued her studies while working as a cook in the hostel kitchen and scored 82 per cent in Arts stream in Class XII.

The success story of Sarla is all the more special as Mahilashram was started by Maharshi Karve 100 years ago for girls like her. Office-bearers of Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha A P Kulkarni and Ravindra Deshpande were all praise for the young girl who worked during the day and studied during the night to realise her mother’s dream — that she completes her education.

Sarla recalls the days before she came to Mahilashram Junior College two years ago: “I was studying in my village before I came here. My mother used to wash dishes to make both ends meet and help me study. She died when I was in Class X. My father is mentally retarded and lives with my uncle. The situation was grim. But my mother wanted me to study further and that was what brought me to Pune.”

Sarla enrolled as an Arts stream student in the college after securing 76 per cent in Class X. “My teachers had supported me a lot and I give them the full credit for my success,” she said.

She wants to pursue D.Ed course and become a teacher. Geography and Marathi are her favourite subjects. “Students like Sarla are the gems of our college and we are proud of her success,” said Padmaja Nalawade, principal of Mahilashram Junior College.
