More installments to follow after assessment
The district administration on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs 1.52 lakh on Maya Restaurant and Lounge in Wagholi for non-payment of entertainment tax.
The district administration said this was the initial installment and it was yet to ascertain the total fine to be imposed and the duration for which the restaurant had not paid the entertainment tax.
Entertainment tax department chief Geetanjali Shirke said the present calculations are only of a month and the department would be issuing another notice for the remaining months. The charges for operating a discotheque is Rs 50,000 while the fine for non-payment is Rs 1 lakh and another Rs 2,000, said Shirke. The administration is also preparing documents to lodge a complaint against the owner for operating without the requisite licence.
They did not have the licence to operate as a discotheque. The complaint would be filed against this violation, added Shirke. The case would be filed against the owner under Section 5 of the Bombay Entertainment Duty Act,1923.
Many restaurants have been regularly defaulting. In 2010,we had collected Rs 7-lakh fine from defaulters after which restaurants in general started following the norms, Shirke said,adding that a special drive would be carried out to check defaulters in and around Pune city.
