Pune Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi seems to have been fed up working with the civic body. That’s the reason, say civic activists, why the PMC boss slipped out of the civic headquarters without much noise.

Pardeshi, who actively promoted the use of bicycles as a mode of transport, has bid adieu to the civic body after completing a two-year term and gone on six months leave. Additional Municipal Commissioner Machhindranath Devnikar has taken over as the acting commissioner till he receives further government intimation. The reason for Pardeshi’s sudden disappearance could not be known. Repeated calls on his cellphone went unanswered since Saturday.

Pardeshi had taken over PMC commissioner on April 23,2007,following the civic elections in February. After completing a two-year term, however,he has taken a leave reportedly for personal reasons.

In his official statement issued on Monday,Pardeshi said,“Ahead of the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008,a number of steps were undertaken including good roads, effective water supply scheme, sewage management, safe pavements and cycle tracks. Besides this, efforts were also made to give more powers to ward offices,Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP),Metro rail, promotion of Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Cell.”

Pardeshi said,“While working as a PMC chief,I could carry out a number of civic capital works without any friction and could garner experiences as an administrator.”

Pardeshi has been promoting the cause of using cycles amongst the civic officials, corporators and general people. With this objective,he had also initiated a “No Vehicle Day” at PMC on Tuesdays.

Apart from ensuring smooth roads in the city,Pardeshi had also played an important role in bringing funds for the development of the city under Jawarharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Civic activists said Pardeshi will be best remembered for taking over of the Khadki stretch of the Pune-Mumbai highway and starting concretisation work like Wakdewadi. “Nearly 200 people had died on the road stretch in 10 years. Pardeshi has changed the complete complexion of the road,” said activist Rajan Pillai.
