From the day the model code of conduct came into force Pune district excise department has seized illicit liquor worth Rs 48.09 lakh. From September 1 to October 4,the department has registered 771 cases for production,distribution and sale of illicit liquor in the district.
The department has arrested 243 persons and seized 24,731 litres of liquor,besides 5.11 lakh litres of chemicals used for distilling liquor.
Vijay Chinchalkar,superintendent of excise department,said the drive was conducted in 21 Assembly constituencies of the district. A total of 279 litres of IMFL,152 litres country liquor,78 litres beer and 4,212 litres of toddy were seized, said Chinchalkar.
The department has also declared October 11-13, as well as October 22 as dry days. He said vigilance squads at 21 spots in the assembly segments will keep a watch on sale of illicit liquor.
The department has also raided 35 dhabas along the Pune-Mumbai highway and seized 16 vehicles carrying illicit liquor.
The department has identified villages like Loni Kalbhor,Pandharsthal,Sortapwadi,Uruli Devachi,Shirur,Nimgaon Mhalunge and Dorlewadi in Baramati taluka and suburbs like Phugewadi and Bhatnagar in Pimpri-Chinchwad as the manufacturing bases.
