With major political parties declaring their candidates in Pune district, the war of words seems to have begun in the right earnest among candidates. The political temperature in Shirur is especially rising at a faster rate with the Shiv Sena and the NCP leaders leaving no stone unturned to run down each other.

The latest verbal duel involves Shirur sitting MP Shivajirao Adhalrao-Patil and state assembly Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil, who is a top NCP leader. It all started when Walse-Patil said,”I made Adhalrao the MP….It was my mistake.”

In a letter released to the press in response to the “tom-tomming” by Walse-Patil, Adhalrao said he had to leave the NCP because Walse-Patil had opposed his nomination as the MP by the party.

“Since Walse-Patil opposed my nomination, I had to contest the election on Shiv Sena ticket 10 years ago,” he said.
When asked if this means he still has a soft corner for the NCP? he said, “No, I have been talking about why I had to leave the NCP…I would not have left the party if there was no opposition for my nomination….”

Citing reasons for Walse-Patil’s opposition to his nomination, Adhalrao said, “You  believed that nobody should become bigger than you. You thought if I become an MP, your importance will lessen….That’s is why you opposed my nomination…So do  not spread lies and mislead people,” said Adhalrao in the letter in response to Walse-Patil’s remarks made at a rally in Rajgurunagar last week.  However, Adhalrao  did not mention Walse-Patil in the letter.

“The NCP chief Sharad Pawar wanted to give the NCP nomination to me. Have you ever helped anybody rise in life in the taluka ? On the contrary, I can cite names of several leaders whose career ended because of you,” Adhalrao alleged in the letter.
He added, “I initiated development projects in Shirur and you inaugurated them…but if you say you made me the MP, then it would be a height of a lie,” he said.

In the letter, Adhalrao alleged Walse-Patil had no knowledge of Ambegaon taluka. “You  were working as Sharad Pawar’s secretary in Mumbai. I brought you to our village and introduced you to several people. I bore the expenses of your election and  worked day and night to make you an MLA,” said Adhalrao.

He added, “I got Rs 1400-crore Pune-Nashik highway approved and also successfully pursued the Pune-Nashik railway line plan besides implementing other development projects.”

“Despite the fact that you were part of the government over the years, what development projects did you implement ?” he asked.
Not just Walse-Patil, other top leaders of the NCP too have been targeting Adhalrao in the Shirur constituency. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar led from the front, asking the NCP leaders to put up a united fight and snatch the seat from Sena, which, he said, always belonged to the party.
