Senior BJP leader Girish Bapat on Monday declared his intention to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls on party ticket, while making it clear that he won’t contest the Assembly polls hereafter.

Bapat had won the Assembly elections for four consecutive terms from Kasba Peth constituency.

“This is my fourth term in the state Legislative Assembly. Now,I have decided not to contest the Assembly polls. I will contest the Lok Sabha polls if the party allows me to,” Bapat said at Idea Exchange held at The Indian Express office at Shivajinagar on Monday.

The BJP legislator from Kasba Assembly constituency said he expects someone from the young generation to contest for the Assembly seat that he represented for the past 20 years.

When pointed out that this might affect his chances of gaining ministerial berth if the saffron combine comes to power in the state,Bapat said he was firm on his decision and will not look back.

“I am satisfied with my four terms as an MLA. I have served the city to the best of my abilities. I might not have become a minister, but I don’t regret that…,” said Bapat.

The Public Accounts Committee, headed by him, indicted city MP Suresh Kalmadi, alleging that he committed a fraud of Rs 32 crore, while organising Commonwealth Youth Games.

Kalmadi had denied the allegations and called them politically motivated.

Bapat, however, rubbished reports that he brought the allegations against Kalmadi as he wanted to contest from the Pune Lok Sabha seat which Kalmadi represents.
