WITH the elections to the municipal councils coming to end, senior leaders of all the political parties have now shifted their focus to the urban local bodies, including Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). As leaders line up to make their presence felt in the city ahead of the civic polls, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seems to be taking the lead.

Fadnavis would soon inaugurate various civic projects in the electoral panel represented by BJP corporators. He would also hold a public rally on Monday after inaugurating three civic projects.
The BJP is also planning a visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lay the foundation stone for the Pune Metro Rail Project on December 24. However, opposing the move, the NCP, Congress and MNS are planning to get NCP chief Sharad Pawar to lay the foundation stone on December 22 instead.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray would be in the city for two days from Saturday and would inaugurate various civic projects in the electoral panel represented by MNS corporators, at Koregaon Park, Kothrud and Nal Stop. The party is also planning to hold more functions in the city during his visit.
Similarly, the ruling NCP in PMC has planned inauguration of various civic projects through party leader Ajit Pawar and MP Supriya Sule. The inauguration of newly-constructed roads, junctions, gardens, civic buildings, along with the foundation laying of various civic projects, is being planned by the party.
“The elections for rural local civic bodies will be over. The Assembly as well as parliamentary session would be over soon, making the availability of leaders easy,” said NCP leader.
Congress would also rope in state unit chief Ashok Chavan and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to inaugurate projects in the electoral panel presently represented by party corporators. In a bid to counter BJP’s plan to get Modi to lay the foundation stone of the metro rail project, the party would urge mayor Prashant Jagtap of the NCP to get it done through its chief. “The Congress would support if NCP chief Sharad Pawar lays the foundation stone for the metro rail project and would urge the NCP leaders to do the same,” said a Congress leader.
The Congress’ move is also seen as a bid to scuttle the NCP and BJP’s plans of bringing the two leaders — Prime Minister and NCP chief — on the same dias for laying the foundation stone of the metro rail.
