After a short respite, temperatures in Pune again started to rise, with Koregaon Park’s automatic weather station (AWS) recording the district’s highest of 40.9 degrees Celsius on Monday. Koregaon Park has been consistently reporting higher than usual temperatures over the last few weeks.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Pune is under what is said to be hot and humid conditions, which can cause serious health issues if not taken seriously.

Other than Koregaon Park Dhamdhere (40.4), in Pune, Dudulgaon (39.8) Chinchwad (39.7) and Magarpatta (39) reported higher than usual temperatures. Shivajinagar reported 38.2, which was also higher than usual.

IMD has defined hot and humid as a phenomenon when maximum temperatures go 3 degrees above the normal and relative humidity is also high. Such conditions are exceptionally dangerous as the higher than normal humidity stops the evaporation of sweat, which is a natural cooling mechanism of the body. In order to save oneself from heat stroke and other conditions, loose cotton clothes should be worn as well as ample water consumed.

IMD’s advisory has also asked people to cover their heads while moving out. Prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the day, is to be avoided.
