Raising the safety of citizens due to poor management of roads by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), civic activists Qaneez Sukhrani and Pushkar Kulkarni have filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court seeking directions to constitute a high level committee to oversee the implementation of various reports on road infrastructure for city.
Sukhrani said PMC is neglecting the condition of roads even after the State Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) was constituted in 2007 with experts in road engineering from state and city level to suggest technical measures to improve quality of design, specifications and construction of roads and their proper upkeep.
The committee submitted a report with 130 points. The petitioner stated that in 2016, PMC constituted the Road development and Road Maintenance Committee (RDRMC) that was entrusted with the task of reviewing the STAC report, and it stated that the PMC did not implement the STAC report.
Now, it has been seven years, and neither has the STAC nor the RDRMC report been implemented by PMC, she said.
The petitioners have sought directions that the STAC and RDRMC report be complied with, and that a committee be constituted that comprises a retired High Court judge, an advocate, two technical experts one from IIT Bombay and one from Central Institute of Road Transport, and two citizens with expertise in road engineering to oversee implementation of the STAC and RDRMC report.
