Well versed with the local dialects of Hindi and Marathi, members of the Austrio-German band Bauchklang might not come across as the stereotypical firang log. Seated relaxed before their maiden performance in the city, the guys portray a myriad hues of emotions as they get ready to speak about their unique style of music, their band, and their relationship with the cities of Mumbai and Pune.

Philipp Sageder, the back-up vocalist of the band breaks the ice as he grins an impish smile and says,“People often ask us about our unique band name. The word Bauchklang is actually made up of two words Bauchk and Lang, which, loosely translated from German mean Gut/Diaphragm and Tone. Sound originates from the stomach, basically from the diaphragm and that’s why we call it Gut-Tone.”

Elaborating about the unique style of the band,Andreas Fraenzl, lead vocalist says,“We don’t call ourselves a beat boxing band, but we view ourselves more as a vocal groove project. We are of the firm belief that music is all about transcending man-made boundaries and we’d like everyone who listens to us to identify with the music.” He adds,“Also, because it is a lot of fun to actually create sounds using only our vocal chords,we choose to label our music a vocal project.” The band has been making waves on the international beat box scene ever since the launch of their first album Jamzero in 2001. Now in the city for the Tuborg-Fun Starter Nights programme at Club One,the band members are confidence repersonified.

Speak to them about their upcoming performance and Christian Birawsky, the mouthpercussionist of the band says,“We performed for the first time last year in Mumbai at the Bluefrog Club, and the response was so phenomenal that we were completely taken aback. Besides,we were joined on stage by Zakir Hussain himself, which was an even bigger honour. So,we connect very well with the Indian audiences.”

“As far as our maiden performance in Pune goes,we are really at home in this city because we have a lot of friends here. Besides,my wife is also from the city. So,none of us are aliens to Pune. What is really cool about the audience here is the fact that everyone is welcome here. And even though the audience is very demanding, they are,at the same time, very patient and give everyone a fair chance to perform. In fact, during our concert,we will be performing all the songs from our new release Live in Mumbai for the audiences in Pune,” adds Phillip.

( Bauchklang will be performing at Club One,on Sunday,July 19,8 pm onwards)
