Aslam Shabbir Shaikh alias Bunti Jahagirdar (52), an accused in the 2012 Jangli Maharaj (JM) Road serial bomb blast case in Pune, was shot dead in Shrirampur in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra on Wednesday afternoon.

A resident of ward number 2 in Shrirampur, Jahagirdar was currently out on bail. According to the police, after attending a ritual, when Jahagirdar came out of a crematorium in Shrirampur on a two-wheeler, unidentified persons opened fire at him from two pistols, around 2.15pm.

Jahagirdar suffered bullet injuries and collapsed. The assailants fled the spot on a motorcycle. After receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the crime scene. Jahagirdar was initially taken to the Sakhar Kamgar Hospital in Shrirampur, but later shifted to a private hospital for treatment.

Somnath Gharge, Superintendent of Police, Ahilyanagar, confirmed that Jahagirdar died at the hospital. “The assailants are unidentified. Prima-facie, it is suspected that two persons opened fire. Attempts are on to confirm the motive behind the murder. It is also being investigated whether more persons are involved in the crime. Different possibilities are being probed,” said Gharge.

An FIR for murder was registered at the Shrirampur police station. Police checked CCTV cameras of certain locations to get clues about the assailants and received blurry images of the two suspects and the number plate of their motorcycle.

Police teams were dispatched in search for the suspects and a probe was launched to know whether they killed Jahagidar due to any previous rivalry or any other reasons.

According to police, Jahagirdar was a notorious criminal on record, booked in 18 offences allegedly linked to illegal sand business, extortion, murder and terrorism. He also faced externment orders from the Ahilyanagar police due to his alleged involvement in criminal activities. Apart from the bomb blast case in Pune, Jahagirdar was earlier arrested under the Officials Secret Act in Nashik in 2006 for his alleged role in leaking Army information.

Jahagirdar was also known to be active in local politics. His mother, associated with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was a former member of the Shrirampur Municipal Council. His cousin Raees Jahagirdar recently got elected as a councillor at the Shrirampur municipal council.

After knowing about the attack on Jahagirdar, several local politicians rushed to the hospital to see him. The incident caused a tense situation in Shrirampur.

Jahagirdar was arrested by the Maharashtra ATS in January 2013 for his alleged links with low intensity bomb blasts on J M road in Pune on August 1, 2012, in which one person was left injured.

ATS probe had revealed that bomb blasts were carried out on the instructions of fugitive Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist Riyaz Bhatkal for taking revenge of alleged IM operative Qateel Siddiqui’s murder by gangster Sharad Mohol in Pune’s Yerwada jail on June 6, 2012.

The ATS had alleged that the other accused in the J M road serial bomb blast case had procured three pistols and ammunition from Jahagirdar, allegedly for avenging Qateel’s murder and assassination of political and religious leaders.

Jahagirdar was booked under Sections 307, 427, 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Indian Arms Act and Indian Explosive Substances Act.

On October 1, 2015, he was granted bail by the Bombay High Court, which said that prima facie, his connection to the alleged conspiracy was “far-fetched”. However, in May 2019, he had to surrender before a special court in Mumbai after his bail was cancelled, for causing violation of the bail conditions to mark his attendance at the ATS office once a month.

He was again released from jail after the the Bombay HC granted him bail in January 2023, observing that he has undergone nearly six years of imprisonment as an undertrial and his further pre-trial incarceration was not necessary.
