Grief-stricken families of the victims from Yerawada and Chandannagar had to wait for a long time before they were handed over the bodies on Monday.
More than 18 bodies were taken to Khalapur civil hospital and it was only after 4 pm that most of them could be sent to Pune,said Dr Siddharth Dhende,local corporator from Yerawada.
When he heard of the accident,he took a couple of friends and immediately went to Panvel.
State health department bus driver Suresh Gaikwad lost his family members in the incident. Dhende got their bodies back from Panvel.
Gaikwad lost his wife Mangal,whose body was at Sassoon Hospital morgue,and other relatives Shubam (20) and Swapna (23),Dhende said. Other relatives like Aniket and Nanda Ovhal too died in the incident and we got their bodies back after their post mortem at the civil hospital.
Other local corporator Kishore Vithkar and Mayor Vaishali Bankar also helped families of victims by ensuring that bodies were released soon from hospitals in Khalapur and Panvel.
