Music festival Baajaa Gaajaa 2012 will have a new feature this year — a ‘Music Conclave’ with panelists from the world of music, films, literature and technology

This year,Baajaa Gaajaa, the annual music festival that highlights various genres of music – from rock, blues, and jazz to instrumental, folk Hindustani and Carnatic vocals – will have something more for music lovers to look forward to. Apart from the performances by noted musicians, the festival,in its fourth year in Pune, will have two days dedicated to a ‘Music Conclave’. Eminent personalities will participate in a day-long debate on a topic relevant to the music industry. The panelists will be from the world of music, films, literature and technology.

Commenting on the need for introducing ‘Music Conclave’ as an individual event at Baajaa Gaajaa, singer Shubha Mudgal, who conceptualised Baajaa Gaajaa along with table maestro Aneesh Pradhan, says,“In the past three years,we’ve included seminars and discussions in the festival schedule. But the response has been such that we felt the need to have this as a separate and elaborate event.” The conclave will have four sessions of two hours each on themes like ‘Music in Film Narrative’,‘Music in Fact and Fiction’,‘Film Music: The Composer’s Perspective’ and ‘Indian Music in a Digital World’. “There will also be a time-slot for an interaction between the panelists and the audience,” adds Mudgal.

The members include prominent names — Amol Palekar,Imtiaz Ali,Shubhra Gupta,Kiran Nagarkar,Deepti Priya Mehrotra,Yatindra Misra,Jerry Pinto,Ganesh Natarajan,Aditya Mehta,N Shashikiran,Nandu Kulkarni,Shantanu Moitra,Debajyoti Mishra and so on. The conclave will be held on February 11 and 12 at Ishanya Mall,Airport road. “We zeroed-in on the panelists depending upon the themes. For example,it was appropriate to invite authors who have written on music for the ‘Music in Fact and Fiction’ panel. In most cases,we thought of the themes first and the panelists and moderators followed suit,” explains the songstress.

The ‘Indian Music in a Digital World’ panel will have experts in the areas of technology and music sharing their experiences and insights on the subject with the audience. The panel members include Carnatic vocalist N Shashikiran who started the popular website http://www.carnatica.net; Aditya Mehta of Sudeep Audio who distributes a variety of software products that musicians can use to distribute their music digitally; and Nandu Kulkarni, founder of the portal http://www.ShadjaMadhyam.com that provides a variety of music related services including online teaching of Indian music. “We also have Ganesh Natarajan, vice chairman and CEO of Zensar Technologies, who will share his expertise on the topic,” Mudgal says. This theme, she adds,is also closely related to the work of her joint venture http://www.UnderscoreRecords.com which focuses on providing a platform for independent publishing and distribution of Indian music. The music festival is an initiative promoted under this independent label.
