At Ganesh Florists on F C Road, tulips sell for Rs 150 per stem,a Cymbidium orchid for Rs 1,200-1,500 and an exotic rose variety for a whopping Rs 500-Rs 800 per piece. If the florist is to believed, these flowers are selling well and perhaps this is the reason why he is not the only one stocking these exotic and expensive flowers.

In the last two months, over 20 varieties of flowers imported from Holland,Africa,China and Australia have hit the city’s flower markets. These flowers come with a long shelf life and a high price tag. Distributed across the city, these are tulips, alstroemeria, chrysanthemums, cymbidium orchids, gossypiums, zantedeschia and a whole bunch of others that have changed the look and business of flowers in the city.

Flower distributor and owner of Flora Ambience Ketan Mane says,“We recently started getting these flowers from North America,Africa,Europe and Australia. Once the flowers reach Pune,we have a distribution network which consists of 10 florists in different parts of the city. A chunk of these flowers also go for big parties, events and weddings.” In a week,Mane sells more than 2,500 flower stems and the market only looks more promising according to him. “We get around three consignments every week and the response is good,” says Mane.

Vijay Abnave, owner of Sayali Florists who buys these flowers from Mane to sell on FC Road, feels these flowers have brought in a new clientele. “I got two varieties from China a week ago. The flowers from Holland are really expensive. Australian flowers like protea that have a shelf life of six months sell for Rs 750 a stick. Chrysanthemums sell for Rs 100-200 a stick.” While these varieties are used for decoration and ornamentation in parties and corporate affairs,walk-ins and impromptu buying also ensure a good sale. Ganesh Florist owner Sanjay Shingare, who started ordering flowers from Holland two months ago, says,“I order flowers every eight days on hollandflower.com and the flowers reach Pune in 30 hours. I have a distribution network which consists of 10-15 other florists in Kothrud,Koregaon Park,Camp,Tilak Road and F C Road who buy these flowers from us.” The more popular varieties to be distributed are chrysanthemums, tulips, liliums and gossypiums
