As part of its golden jubilee celebrations,the Rose Society of Pune has planned several attractions at the rose show on Sunday,the last day of the three-day celebrations.
The Rose Society was founded by Jaywantrao Tilak,the grandson of Lokmanya Tilak,in June 1962. The Society has almost 1,000 members who share their passion and knowledge of roses at the monthly meetings. The society organises weekend rose shows twice a year in January and September.
To mark the golden anniversary,the society had planned the September rose show spanning three days. Hundreds of roses of 86 varieties and other flowers are on display at the show. The society has introduced four new competitions best rose-in-a-bowl display,rose-in-a-vase contest,a culinary competition using rose products such as gulkand and rose water and a rose-themed arts contest with painting,embroidery and photography, said Society secretary Bhagyashree Takle.
Society president Anupama Barve said people have come from Bangalore,Kolkata,Nasik and Nagpur to be part of the celebrations.
At the show rose enthusiasts Kasturi Rangan and Vijay Chandane were felicitated by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar for their contributions towards developing varieties of roses.
The felicitation was followed by a live orchestra performance for the visitors. An exhibition of gardening equipment was also organised during the show. On Sunday,the Society will give away trophies to winners of the contests held on the first day of the show. Rajendra Nirman has won King of the show title,Monica Varanashivar Queen of the show,Pune Municipal Corporation Prince of the show and Jayashree Jabade Princess of the show. Mancher Irani has bagged the Vijayshree award and Kavita Vaishampayan the Mahabank Trophy.
In a marked departure from tradition,the Society also plans to host a third rose show on December 29 and 30 at Tilak Smarak Mandir.
