78 ACB traps on government officials,highest in 23 years

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has laid 78 traps against government officials in Pune this year,the highest in 20 years.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has laid 78 traps against government officials in Pune this year,the highest in 20 years. The ACB,which has trapped over 100 officials so far this year,says the number of traps is likely to cross 100.

With the arrest of deputy collector Pune tenancy branch Kiran Mahajan and his aide ACB officials seem to have their hands full.

“After 78 traps,the list of officials is very high. This year we had 12 class I officers,8 class II officers and 71 class III officers,besides 12 private individuals being arrested for graft,’’ said superintendent of police,ACB Pune range,Sarang Awad.

The amount confiscated is again the highest this year,he says. The ACB seized Rs 11.21 lakh ‘trap amount’,against Rs 2.95 lakh last year.

ACB figures show that 32 arrests were made from the revenue department,34 from the police department and three each from the land records department,PMC,panchayat samiti and the MSEB. Two each were arrested from the town planning,food and civil supplies,and irrigation departments,besides the ZP. One arrest each was made from the weights and measurements,law and judiciary,dairy development,health and sports departments. Four arrests came from the social welfare department,and six from the RTO. While all these were cases of demanding graft, an education department official and a ZP officials were also arrested for offering bribe,taking the total to over 100.

“In Pune division,140 government officials will face government inquiry. The inquiry is either discreet or open and there is about 50 per cent in both categories,’’ said Awad. The ACB has also been generating source reports on their own focusing on collating information on officers under suspicion even if there are no official complaints registered. Around 30 officials are under the scanner in Pune district.

Pune divisional commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh said,“We will launch an online system for people who want to register complaints.’’ He added Mahajan and his aide will definitely be suspended and a department inquiry initiated against them.
