Sanjay Joshi,39,has become the sixth patient to die of swine flu in the city. Joshi,a resident of Sadashiv Peth,died on March 19 at Sahyadri Hospital,and throat swab test results on Wednesday showed it was swine flu,said Dr Shyam Satpute,nodal officer at Pune Municipal Corporation. Joshi had viral pneumonia and had developed acute respiratory failure.
He was under treatment at a private clinic since March 16 but after turning breathless he was admitted to Sahyadri Hospital on March 19 and died the same day.
His throat swab was sent for examination on March 19 and tested positive for H1N1 virus and was submitted to health authorities on Wednesday.
However,Dr Vinayak More,district civil surgeon,said that there is no need to panic as more than 200 screening centres in the district have been activated and people are being administered the oseltamavir tablets in case they show clinical symptoms of swine flu.
As many as 17 new cases of swine flu were detected on Wednesday taking the total cases to 80 since March 1.
According to Satpute,four persons are on ventilator support at different hospitals while 48 have been admitted to isolation wards.
About 32 are getting treatment from the Out Patient Department (OPD),Satpute said.
Meanwhile,in Pimpri-Chinchwad,three new swine flu cases were detected. Three patients are on ventilator.
