Ela Foundation is holding the 6th Indian Owl Festival from December 4-6 at Ela Habitat, Pingori, Taluka Purandar, Pune.The festival aims at creating awareness about the importance of owls in the ecosystem.
“Owls are friends of farmers since they play an important role in controlling crop pests. Moreover, owls are shrouded in superstitious beliefs which are prominently addressed in the festival to promote their conservation. We expect more than 25,000 participants in this year’s exhibition and performance,” Dr Satish Pande, Director Ela Foundation said.
The foundation has adopted various novel educational modalities to sensitise the public about owls. This is achieved through active participation of students and citizens. “We display owl related contributions including paintings, face masks, book marks, kites, sculptures, rangoli art, mehendi art, face painting, and others,” Dr Pande said, “Performances by participants, dedicated to owls, are staged during the festival,which include skits, songs, cultural presentations with focus on owls including kirtan, bhajan, bharud, gondhal, and others,” he added.
The owl festival is arranged over 2 acres of area within Ela Habitat premises. Pandals are erected where owl art is displayed. Two stages are used for performances by artists. Stalls are prepared for mehendi drawing and face painting for participants. Other stalls are dedicated to display and sale of owl related artefacts, and books and educational material published by Ela Foundation.
According to Dr Pande, over 15,000 owl-related contributions of drawings, sculptures, face masks, book marks, artefacts from 200+ schools, colleges and also public from various parts of India will be displayed by Ela Foundation in the Owl Festival at Ela Habitat Pingori.
The foundation will also give away Aranyaani nature conservation award.
