5 of family die as car rams into tree on Kolhapur highway

Five members of a family in Pune died in a car accident on the Kolhapur-Ratnagiri Highway on Saturday afternoon.

Five members of a family in Pune died in a car accident on the Kolhapur-Ratnagiri Highway on Saturday afternoon. According to the Kolhapur police, the accident happened around 2.30 pm, when the vehicle the family was traveling in hit a tree on the highway near Malkapur town in Kolhapur.

The police has identifed the deceased as Sharif Sheikh (58), his wife Salma (50), their son Imran (38) and daughter-in-law Shifa (32). Liba, the eight-year-old granddaughter of the family also perished in the accident. While Imran, Shifa and Sharif were declared dead on arrival at the Malkapur Gramin hospital, Liba died at the CPR hospital in Kolhapur while undergoing treatment and her grandmother Salma succumbed to her injuries in a hospital near Sakharpa Ratnagiri district.

The family was headed towards Vishalgarh when the accident took place. All the deceased are residents of Ghorpadi and Hadapsar in Pune. The investigating officer of Kolhapur Police said, “The family left for Vishalgarh at 7.30 in the morning for a family trip when their car lost control and hit the tree on the highway.” This highway has seen many such incidents in the past.
