CLASSICAL music connoisseurs filled Namdev Sabagruha,University of Pune,on Thursday,the first day of the kirana gharana festival organised by Pune University’s Lalit Kala Kendra . The University’s Centre of Performing Arts,popularly known as Lalit Kala Kendra,is hosting the three-day festival to celebrate and explore kirana gharana,as part of the department’s research projects.

The festival was inaugurated by acclaimed vocalist Prabha Atre,followed by a seminar with lectures and discussions by artists and scholars such as Shrinivas Joshi,son of Kirana gharana stalwart the late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. In the afternoon session,Pandit Venkatesh Kumar performed to great applause from the audience.

Seminars and performances are lined up for the next two days of the festival,said Prof Chaitanya Kunte. On Friday,speakers such as Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan will discuss aspects of the gharana such as its tradition and lineage.
