RTE ACT These schools would not have to admit 25% students from economically weaker sections

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Education Board on Wednesday released a list of 30 minority unaided schools in the city that would not have to admit 25 per cent students from economically weaker sections (EWS) as per the RTE Act. All other schools will need to implement it starting this year.

There are as many as 400 schools under the jurisdiction of PMC Education Board. Only minority schools that have never taken any assistance from the government will be exempted.

Meanwhile, the students wing of political parties met the deputy director of education Ramchandra Jadhav on Wednesday. “About 4-5 groups from different political parties met the deputy director of education and asked him to ensure that at least one school starts implementing the Act so that other schools can follow suit. Over the past few weeks,we have been receiving complaints from parents who have not even been allowed entry into some schools,” said Nilesh Borate, general secretary,Pune City Congress Committee.

Jadhav said,“We understand the need of speedy implementation of the Act. There are many schools that have been trying to get away without implementing the Act. We have prepared a list to bring about clarity regarding the status of such schools. Any school that is not on our list, will need to come to us with an affidavit stating the category proof.”

On Wednesday,as many as 40 teams comprising a supervisor and a teacher from the cluster resource centers started survey of all the schools.

“We are conducting this survey to check documents of all the schools coming under the civic body jurisdiction. Schools that are unaided but have taken any government assistance will also need to comply with the RTE norms. We will get the report of the survey by Friday,” added Jadhav.

Civic body sets up RTE cell

The PMC education board has set up a cell to ensure strict implementation of RTE in schools. Parents with any query on the Act or the admission process can call the cell that will be functional from Thursday at PMC’s School No. 8. Subhash Swamy of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan will head the cell.
