With three more deaths being reported since Saturday,the swine flu toll has now gone up to 45 in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas this year. While 33 deaths have been reported from the Pune Municipal Corporation areas,the virus has claimed 12 lives in PCMC areas since January.
Among the three persons who died was three-and-a-half-year-old Shramika from Bharatiya Samaj Seva Kendra,an orphanage at Koregaon Park. A cerebral palsy patient,Shramika had fever,convulsions and drowsiness since July 8 before she went into respiratory distress on July 12 and was admitted to KEM hospital. The National Institute of Virology report for her throat swab tested positive on July 17. She died of acute respiratory distress syndrome due to sepsis with H1N1 virus on August 10.
This is the second death of a child due to swine flu this year.
Another person who succumbed to the infection is 33-year-old Anil Alhat,who had cough with expectoration since July 26 and was treated at several hospitals before he died.
Anil,a resident of Khed tehsil,was treated at Lokmanya hospital in Chinchwad before being shifted to Ruby Hall Clinic on August 5. While tamiflu was given from August 1,his throat swab tested positive for swine flu (H1N1 virus) on August 6. He died of pneumonia with refractory hypoxemia due to H1N1 virus on August 10 at Ruby Hall Clinic.
Suresh Tilekar,42,from Dehu,who was admitted to a hospital in the PCMC area,too,died of swine flu. A total of 7,382 persons have been given tamiflu in PCMC areas this year.
In the PMC area,six people are on ventilator support while 12 are admitted to various hospital wards. Tamiflu tablets have been administered to as many as 18,766 people since January,with a total of 225 testing positive for the virus.
