The trail of blood found at a secluded spot at Lohegaon has led police to uncover the brutal murder of a 25-year-old engineer, who was working with a multinational software company and whose body was found hours later in Dhanori.

The police suspect the incident to be a fallout of an illicit affair. They have also arrested one person in this connection.

The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Dnyaneshwar Hargude,a resident of Khese Colony in Lohegaon, who worked with a multinational software company at its Yerawada office. Police said Rakesh had gone missing from his home in Lohegaon on Saturday. His father filed a missing person’s complaint at Airport police station.

On Sunday morning,Bhupendrasingh Tarasingh approached Lohegaon Police Chowky, claiming to have seen a lot of blood at an isolated spot in Kalwad area along the rear wall of an infrastructure company. After teams from the Airport police visited the spot, they started looking for the source of blood.

“One of our teams started checking for missing person’s complaints that might have been registered with any of the police stations recently. We found the case filed by Dnyaneshwar Hargude, stating that his son Rakesh was missing. We took him to the spot where Tarasingh had found the blood. Hargude identified his son’s wallet. We were sure that Rakesh had also been assaulted. He also told us that Rakesh was threatened by one Krushna Swami and his friend over some old dispute.”

Police set up fresh teams to look for Swami. Based on a tip-off,he was arrested from his house at Wagholi Road in Lohegaon. Naukudkar added,“After sustained questions,he confessed to his crime and led us to a spot behind a water tank in Dhanori. He gave certain specific details about the assault, stating that Rakesh’s throat had been slit. Swami also mentioned the involvement of an accomplice,Ganesh Jagtap. We have launched a search for him.”

Police investigation revealed that Rakesh had an affair with a woman, who was married to Swami’s friend. Swami had threatened Rakesh over the matter several times in the past.

Police said the woman’s husband is lodged in Yerawada jail, awaiting trial in an attempt to murder case. Senior police officers said they were investigating whether the man lodged in jail had any involvement in the case.

Rakesh was the only son of his parents, who had moved to Pune from Shirur a few years ago and was staying in Lohegaon since then, police said.
