As many as 223 drivers were honoured by the Mahashrashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) for their exceptional service of steering the MSRTC buses for 25 years without any accidents. The function was held at Acharya Atre hall in Pimpri. “My job is to take passengers, whosoever they are,to their destination safely and securely…I have done this for over 25 years,” said Shaikh Gulam Habib Shaikh Gulam Mustafa of Nanded.

Mohammed Hussain Sardaruddin Kadir (54) from Aurangabad said,“I have been on Pune-Nashik-Latur route, but I don’t remember having hurt even a single person.” The drivers said they will cherish the day their entire life. “I feel happy and satisfied that I have put in unblemished service for 25 years,” said Kadir.

What irritates them most while driving, said Kadir, are the toll nakas especially in Pune where lot of time is wasted while waiting. Most of the drivers said they remain cool and calm while driving and that is their success mantra for driving without accidents for over decades. “There is heavy and fast moving traffic with vehicles dangerously coming close or suddenly stopping. Only if the drivers maintain a steady speed, they can ensure safety of their passengers,” said Kadir.

The drivers were felicitated along with their wives who accompanied their husbands to receive a cheque of Rs 7000,a memento and a shawl. Some 105 conductors where also honoured. The MSRTC has its own reason to felicitate the wives. “Women play a very crucial role in keeping the drivers mentally stable. If the atmosphere at home is cordial, the drivers will be in a good mood. If the women keep quarrelling,it affects the driving mood of a driver which could result in an accident. If these drivers have a clean record, the credit must also go to their wives,” said Mukund Dhus,an MSRTC official. In all,the MSRTC has 30,000 drivers. Every day, throughout the state they make as many as 84,000 trips.

State Minister for Transport Gulabrao Devkar, who along with MSRTC MD Deepak Kapoor honoured the outstanding drivers and conductors, said,“The MSRTC every year recognises the creditable services of the drivers and conductors. The drivers and conductors who slog through the year deserve this kind of praise.” MSRTC spent nearly Rs 50 lakh in organising the felicitation.
