In Pimpri-Chinchwad,the area beneath the flyover in Pimpri serves as a slaughterhouse for large animals in the past 20 years. This place, which was started as a temporary arrangement in 1988 till a proper slaughterhouse comes into existence, still continues to be the slaughterhouse.
The place is mired in filth and animals are slaughtered in unhygienic conditions posing a serious health risk to the public.
According to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s detailed project report (DPR) on solid waste management,as per BPMC Act,1949,section 63 (12),it is mandatory for every corporation to make provision of land or to make the arrangement for slaughterhouse.
But since 1988,the slaughtering of large animals is done beneath the Pimpri flyover by Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC),which was declared a temporary arrangement till a modern slaughterhouse comes into existence.

It is proposed in the DPR that Pimpri-Chinchwad should have modern slaughterhouse at an appropriate site. Five acres of land will be needed for constructing unloading platform for animals, resting shed for animals, offices, residential complex for staff, bleeding section, dressing conveyer, evisceration, collection of hides, other byproducts and solid wastes for further processing, states the DPR prepared by Dr Nagkumar Kunachgi, medical officer,PCMC.
An effluent treatment plant will also need to be built to treat liquid wastes. Also, for the transportation of processed meat and other products, there should have a separate market.
