Two pages of the main answer sheet of the mathematics paper of an HSC student were lost, raising questions about the manner in which the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) handles answer books of students.
The student,Abhishek Chavan of SSPM Junior College failed in mathematics . He said the answers he solved on the last two pages that were missing, were not assessed.
Abhisheks father Madhukar Chavan said he applied for the photocopy of mathematics answer book. It came as shock for us to see Abhishek failing in the board examination,as he had prepared well throughout the year. The State Board showed us the answer-book of his mathematics paper in response to our application. A close look at the answer book revealed that its two pages were missing, Chavan told Newsline on Tuesday.
Chavan took the matter to higher-ups at Pune division of MSBSHSE,who gave him access to the original answer sheet of Abhishek. The original answer sheet was also without the last two pages. It was clearly seen that my son was allotted marks based on assessment of answer-book that had two pages missing. The authorities were unperturbed over such a big lapse on the part of their machinery, he said.
Chavan added,Abhishek has been given 23 marks in Mathematics. Two marks more and he could have become eligible for grace marks. He is sure he would have scored more than two marks in the missing pages.
When contacted by Newsline,MSBSHSE officials seemed unperturbed by the loss they caused to Abhishek. Boards Pune division head Sunil Chauhan avoided queries, while secretary Pushpalata Pawar said she would look into the issue.
Educationist Dr AL Deshmukh said parents like Chavan have no option but invoke legal proceedings against state board for its poor working.
