A speeding PMPML bus ran over two youths, one of them an MBA student, near Kondhwa police station late Sunday evening.
Police have identified the deceased as Lohit Yugal Kishor Paradhi (24), a resident of Kondhwa Budruk, and Abhishek Tarkeshwar Prasad Singh (29) of Mitha Nagar, Kondhwa. The Kondhwa police have arrested the bus driver, Jagannath Waghmare (50), a resident of Bhekrai Nagar, on charges of negligent driving.

Both Paradhi and Singh were not wearing helmets, said Senior Inspector Pandiranath Mandhare. DCP Vishwas Pandhare, who last week expressed his intention to strictly implement the helmet norm, Monday said the traffic police would certainly implement the drive rigorously.

The police said Paradhi, who was originally from Madhya Pradesh, was studying MBA at a private management college in Kondhwa area. His friend Singh, who was from Jharkhand, had completed his MBA and was currently working with a private company in the city.

The two, along with two more friends, had planned a dinner at Paradhi’s residence and were going there around 9 pm after shopping food items from the Kondhwa market. While Paradhi was riding the two-wheeler, Singh was riding pillion. A speeding PMPML bus knocked them down on the road near Kondhwa police station. The two died on the spot.

Their friend on another two-wheeler, who was a witness to the incident, told the police that the bus did not stop after knocking down Paradhi and Singh. A team of Kondhwa police rushed to the spot and immediately started chasing the bus.

They managed to stop the bus at Yevalewadi and caught the driver. Sub-Inspector Vilas Gujar is investigating the case.
