17 hospitalised after ammonia gas leak at food processing company in Pune district

The incident occurred in a ready-to-eat food preparation unit at Bhandgaon, located around 60 km from Pune, an officer from Yavat police station under the Pune rural jurisdiction said.
Seventeen people, including 15 women, were hospitalised after ammonia gas leaked from the cooling unit of a food processing company in Pune district on Wednesday.
One is in the ICU, while the other 16 are out of danger, officials said on Thursday. The incident took place at a ready-to-eat food preparation unit in Bhandgaon, 60 km from Pune.
“On Wednesday, after ammonia leaked from the cooling unit, 17 staffers showed signs of ammonia poisoning and were hospitalised. As of Thursday morning, one is in ICU but is said to be stable. The other sixteen are out of danger. A probe is on,” said Narayan Deshmukh, police inspector at Yavat police station.
The company Tasty Bite manufactures ready-to-eat food packages. At this unit, the prepared food items are cooled to a certain sub-zero temperature and then packed, the inspector said, and for this process, the unit required a cooling system.
“The leak is suspected to have taken place in this cooling system. Industrial safety inspectors will conduct a thorough search and based on their findings police will decide the further course of action,” Deshmukh said.
