11 traffic cops suspended for cop-out at key junctions

The traffic control branch said in a statement that the cops were absent from assigned duty spots

As many as 11 traffic cops, including three women constables, have been suspended for failing to perform their duties properly when they were deployed at important traffic junctions in the city. The traffic control branch of Pune police said in a statement that the cops were absent from their assigned places of duty on March 6.
The statement said verbal as well as written orders were issued several times to cops attached to the traffic control branch on not leaving their duty spots and avoid chit-chatting while working.
However, there were incidents when traffic police personnel who man important junctions were found not doing their work properly. Sometimes, the cops were absent. Sometimes the cops who are supposed to work actually stand together for chit-chatting at crowded traffic junctions. And, instead of managing vehicular congestion, traffic cops are seen more keen in taking action against those who break traffic rules. Also, some traffic police personnel were found taking bribes from offenders, the statement said.
To improve the situation, action was initiated against the traffic cops not doing their duty. Earlier, those who failed to perform their duties were given punishments in the form of verbal warnings, exercise, strict warnings, fine and even transfer to police headquarters. It may be recalled that in January last week, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare had transferred 22 cops attached to the traffic control branch to the police headquarters, as they were not doing their work properly when deployed at important traffic junctions in the city.
