AT LEAST 10 persons, including developers, partners, architect and the contractor of the project, have been chargesheeted in connection with the Balewadi slab collapse incident on July 2016, which had claimed nine lives. A police official said the key accused kept evading the police for several months and were later granted an anticipatory bail by the Supreme Court.
On July 29, 2016, an illegally constructed slab on the 13th floor of an under-construction building — Park Express Joint Venture, Balewadi — collapsed. The incident had claimed the lives of nine labourers and severely injured three others. Chatushrungi police had booked 10 persons in connection with the incident, four of whom were initially arrested. Later, probe revealed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had granted permission to the developer for construction of only 12 floors. Senior Inspector Dayanand Dhome of Chatushrungi police station said, “A chargesheet has been filed against all the 10 accused in the case. They were presented before the court when the chargesheet was filed about a month ago.”
Those initially arrested were identified as Mrigank Construction Private Limited’s Bhavin Harshad Shah (34), project in-charge of Park Xpress joint venture Dnyaneshwar Chavan and Santosh Chavan, and one more employee of the project identified as Shrikant Kisan Pawar (44) However, six others, who, police said, were the key parties responsible for the mishap, evaded arrested for several months.
In April this year, the six — joint owners of the Park Express Joint Venture, including Arvind Jain, Shravan Agarwal of Shrinivas Developers and Pride Purple Properties, Kailas Wani of Samarth Group, Sham Shende of Abhinav Group, Mahendra Kamat, of Mrigank Construction Private Limited, architect Pradip Kusumkar and structural engineer Hansal Parikh and Associates — were granted bail from the Supreme Court. Police said the accused have been booked under sections 304, 337, 338, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, sections of the Maharashtra Ownership Flats Act 1963 and sections of the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act.
