The confusion within the Delhi BJP over its chief ministerial candidate for the Assembly elections continues with the BJP parliamentary board not meeting on Sunday to discuss the issue.

Amid pressure from the state leaders to project a CM candidate, state unit chief Vijay Goel was seen making rounds of the party’s central office, where top decision-makers had gathered to finalise candidates for Chhattisgarh.

A worried Goel was later seen in the lawns of the residence of party general secretary (organisation) Ramlal, who held a separate meeting with party president Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi after the candidate selection meeting for Chhattisgarh. Narendra Modi,in this context, also held a separate closed-door meeting with Rajnath Singh and party general secretary Ananth Kumar. But there was no official word about this issue.

While Goel was learnt to have attracted the ire of party leadership after he asserted his claim for the post even as the BJP clarified that it had not taken a decision on the issue, his rival Harsh Vardhan’s chances of becoming the BJP CM candidate were put in danger by workers from the state unit, who shouted slogans in his support while party brass held a meeting for Chhattisgarh.

Senior party leaders privately admitted that there was pressure to name a CM candidate other than Goel. Sources said Goel will still have to keep his fingers crossed as top party leaders indicated that the issue will be reviewed by the party leadership a in few days,as senior party leader Arun Jaitley returns from a trip abroad.

But jostling within the state unit was too obvious, with workers from the Delhi unit making the rounds of the central office, where top leaders had gathered for the Chhattisgarh meeting. Though Harsh Vardhan was present for the Chhattisgarh meeting by virtue of being the member of the party’s Central Election Committee,Goel and senior state unit leader Aarti Mehra dropped into the office ahead of the arrival of top party leaders, indicating the jostling within the state unit.
