Initiating a probe into alleged poll code violation by Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma by his remarks on Muslim sub-quota and daring the poll body for action against him,the Election Commission on Friday obtained the video footage of his speech made in Farrukhabad.

The Commission discussed the issue at its late evening meeting which remained inconclusive. The matter would be discussed again on Saturday at the full Commission meeting headed by Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi and two election commissioners V S Sampath and H S Brahma. The Commissioner had earlier sought a copy of the CD containing Verma’s speech in Farrukhabad from the Chief Electoral Officer of UP.

Meanwhile,a notice was issued on Friday to Congress candidate Shakuntala Devi seeking clarification from her on controversial statements made by Verma. Devi is the Congress nominee from Kaiamganj where Verma was canvassing for her. The notice was issued by Election Officer of Kaiamganj (reserved) constituency M K Sharma.

Earlier in the day,BJP petitioned the poll body against Verma seeking immediate and stern action by registering a case against him for alleged violation of the model code of conduct. A party delegation led by Jagat Prakash Nadda and including party MPs Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Shahnawaz Hussain submitted a memorandum to Quraishi in New Delhi. Charging that the Congress regime was deliberately attempting to erode the credibility of constitutional authorities, the BJP maintained that a grave situation had now arisen with the repeated violation of the code of conduct by senior ministers of the UPA government. “The EC should now consider measures more stringent than a mere censure such as prosecution and debarring of delinquent ministers from electioneering in extraordinary situations where lawmakers become lawbreakers,” the BJP memorandum said.

Now,Khurshid defends Beni

Farrukhabad: Union Law minister Salman Khurshid Friday defended his Cabinet colleague Beni Prasad Verma for his minority sub-quota remarks, saying he had made the comments as a Congress leader and not as a minister. “Whatever Beni said was in his capacity as Congress leader and not as a minister. He made his comments on party manifesto, which mentions the reservation issue,” he told reporters here. Elections are fought on the basis of party manifesto and if it is not talked about what else one would say,Khurshid asked.

Sack Beni,Khurshid: Maneka

Badaun: Alleging that the Congress has made a mockery of the Election Commission,BJP leader Maneka Gandhi on Friday demanded resignations of Union ministers Salman Khurshid and Beni Prasad Verma. “Both Salman and Beni neither knows law nor religion. Why they are talking of giving only 18 per cent reservation to Muslims. Why they don’t provide 100 per cent reservation to them,” said Maneka. Maneka said that Sonia Gandhi had surely not wept on Balta encounter as she would have failed to understand the issue.
