Nalanda varsity to have SCO chair on shared Buddhist heritage

Nalanda University will soon have a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) chair on Shared Buddhist Heritage, the university said Friday.

Supported by the Centre as part of its efforts to reinforce India’s key player in Buddhism, the chair aims to promote research in Buddhist Studies & allied fields, and to encourage collaborations between institutes of higher learning in India and SCO member states.

“The ancient Nalanda has functioned as one of the anchoring points in the cross-cultural dialogue, shaping the cultural and civilizational linkages across the region through history,” said Nalanda University Vice Chancellor Sunaina Singh in a statement.

“Nalanda University, in its new avatar, has been carrying out this historical responsibility in today’s multi-polar world. The proposed SCO Chair on Shared Buddhist Heritage at the University has been another step in this direction.”
