A third-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna on Tuesday died by allegedly jumping from his hostel room on the seventh floor on the campus in Amhara, Bihta.

Police said the victim has been identified as Rahul Lavery, a resident of Hyderabad, who was rushed to Netaji Subhas Medical College and Hospital (NSMCH) where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Danapur sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) II Pankaj Kumar Mishra said, “Around 12 pm, the IIT Amhara police station received information that a student jumped off a roof in the IIT campus. Officers rushed to the spot, along with the FSL team which has collected evidence. Prima facia, the incident seems to be of suicide. The student is a native of Telangana. We found a few WhatsApp chats where he had written: ‘I don’t deserve this… I’m a loser.’ We are further investigating the matter.”

A batchmate, Ritu Pran, claimed, “He wasn’t in depression. I don’t know why he took the step, but lately, there’s been too much academic pressure. In the morning, we went to take our exams, but he didn’t… By the time we broke the gate and went in, he had jumped.”
