Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan Wednesday said the Nitish Kumar government was committed to creating one crore jobs in the next five years. He was addressing a joint session of the Bihar Assembly and Council, convened upon the NDA’s return to power.

“We have just held peaceful, free, and fair elections. The people of the state have embraced the development agenda and extended widespread support to the government. The people of Bihar, especially women, have cast an unprecedented vote in this election… A strong awareness of development is evident among all sections of the state, especially women and youth,” he said.

“50 lakh jobs have been created in the state already. The government has set a target of creating 1 crore jobs in the next five years,” he said, mentioning the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, launched a month ahead of the announcement of Assembly polls. “A sum of Rs 10,000 each has been transferred to 1.56 crore women under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana. In due course, it will reach those who are yet to receive the benefit. These women will also be trained through self-help groups. Women whose employment is successful will also receive additional assistance of up to Rs 2 lakh,” he said.

Talking about how self-help groups have been empowering women, the Governor said: “Previously, the number of self-help groups in Bihar was quite low. In 2006, self-help groups were formed with a loan from the World Bank, which were named ‘Jeevika’. Now, the number of self-help groups has grown to approximately 1.1 million, with the number of Jeevika sisters reaching 14 million.”

The Governor said that special attention had been paid to areas such as education, health, electricity, roads, and drinking water ever since Nitish Kumar took over as the Bihar CM in 2005. “Now, there is no fear or intimidation; the state is filled with brotherhood and peace. Maintaining the rule of law in the state is the government’s top priority,” he said.
