The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old youth for allegedly throwing acid on a woman commuter at Goregaon railway station on Tuesday evening. According to the police, the youth disapproved of the friendship between his sister and the victim.

The accused,Pintoo Sheikh, was produced before a Borivali court and was remanded in police custody till February 7.

According to sources,22-year-old Arti Thakur was talking on her mobile phone near the booking office at Goregaon station when Sheikh approached her and allegedly threw acid. As Thakur’s face was covered with a scarf, most of the acid fell on her neck and hands. She was rushed to a private hospital in Goregaon.

The police booked Sheikh for attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal code and arrested him from his house in Malwani,Malad. According to police,Thakur’s mother Sima stayed at Sheikh’s mother’s house for three years as a tenant.

Sima said,“My daughter was attacked on three occasions. Last November, someone hit my daughter on her head and she got three stitches. An FIR was lodged against unknown persons. Recently,I shifted to Nalasopara with my two daughters — Arti and Puja. A fortnight ago,my daughter was again hit on her face. This is third case of attack. Pintoo is a history sheeter.’’

“Pintoo did not want her sister to be with Arti,” said Senior Inspector P M Karyakarte,Borivali GRP. “Shaikh had often told his sister to keep away from Thakur, but the two continued to be good friends,” he added.

The police have also not ruled out the possibility of Shaikh being a jilted lover who wanted to take revenge on the victim.
