Police have arrested a 21-year-old youth who allegedly tried to kill himself by jumping off the Vakola flyover on Wednesday. Interrogations have revealed that the youth, identified as Ghanshyam Kanhaiyalal Nagar, was a jilted lover who had travelled from Madhya Pradesh to the city to meet a colleague at her Borivali residence.

Police said that Nagar had jumped from the Vakola flyover in Santacruz (East) after his calls were repeatedly disconnected by the girl he had come to meet. Following this incident, the Vakola police arrested Nagar on Tuesday, and booked him under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code for attempted suicide.

While Nagar has allegedly not provided the police with much information on his background, the police have managed to establish contact with his father. The police are now awaiting the arrival of his father in Mumbai to ascertain the exact reasons behind his suicide attempt.

Sub-inspector Pallavi Kulkarni of Vakola police said,“The accused is not willing to divulge details. He has even deleted the contacts from the phone directory. After much prodding,we finally managed to get his father’s number and informed him about his son’s whereabouts. His father was surprised to know that he is in Mumbai since Nagar had not informed them.”

Police said,Nagar took a bus from Juhu Chowpatty to Agripada, before heading to the Vakola flyover. On reaching the flyover,he jumped off the bridge.

He landed on a taxi’s bonnet. The taxi driver with the help of local residents took Nagar to VN Desai Hospital, but he was allegedly refused admission there. He was then taken to Sion Hospital in a mobile van of the Vakola police, where he was treated for injuries. The cops took him to custody after he was discharged.
