A 21-year-old youth was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted by a group of four men after he obstructed their way at Kandivali (East) on Saturday.
The police said the youth was taken to Mira Road area, where he was assaulted and then abandoned on the roadside.
The Samta Nagar police said the victim,Rahul Tasgaonkar, stays at the residential quarters of Kamgaar Hospital on Akruli Road in Kandivali (East). His father Vijay works as a doctor at the hospital, while Rahul had recently started working as an activist with a political party after he quit his graduation course in engineering.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 pm on Saturday, said the police. Rahul was attempting to cross the road outside his building when he saw a Toyota Innova car approach him. He gestured at the driver of the car, requesting him to slow down as he wanted to cross the road. The driver was allegedly angered by Rahuls gestures and started hurling obscenities at him. After the two had a heated argument, the driver,Mahendra Rajendra Dillod,(26) a local political party worker residing in Mira Road area, left the spot.
Police officers said that around an hour later,Dillod returned to the spot with a Maruti Swift in tow. The Innova and Swift now had two occupants each. The quartet pushed Rahul into the Innova and sped away. Rahuls friends, who were with him at the time, informed his father, who filed a kidnapping complaint.
The police said that after abducting him,the accused took Rahul to a secluded spot in Mira Road, assaulted him and abandoned him there. Rahul returned home in an autorickshaw at around 3 am on Sunday and was taken to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali for a check-up. He suffered minor injuries on his face. The police said no ransom calls were made to the family.
Senior Inspector N Kamble said the four accused have been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt),363 (kidnapping),504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 34 (common intent).
Rahuls friends had noted the registration numbers of the two vehicles. We were able to trace the Swift through them and arrested Dillod from Bhayander on Monday. He will be produced before a metropolitan court on Tuesday. The Swift car has been seized. A probe is on, said Kamble.
