A 19-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly molesting his six-year-old neighbour at Girgaum chawl. The police said the accused had earlier sexually assaulted the girl last month. No complaint had been lodged then, as the family of the accused had come to a settlement with the girl’s parents, the police said
“Nihar Tambade, a student at a south Mumbai college, had sexually assaulted the girl on Tuesday afternoon, when she entered his residence. The girl knows Tambade well, since they have been neighbours for years. On Tuesday, after her father left for work and her mother stepped out of house, the girl, who was playing alone, walked into Tambade’s home. Tambade was also alone at that time, as his mother, a maid, had gone to work,” said Suresh Kilje, Senior Inspector, V P Road Police Station.
Police said Tambade shut the door and assaulted her. “The girl began to cry and Tambade let her go after threatening her against informing anyone about the incident. The girl, however, confided in her mother, who informed police,” said Kilje. Tambade has been remanded in police custody till March 10.
