A burnt body of a woman was found under a pipeline near the Powai Vihar Lake in Mumbai on Thursday, police said. The identity of the victim, believed to be aged 25-30 years, is still to be ascertained, they said.
Police have recorded several statements in the case including that of the person who alerted the police after seeing the body.
Vilas Shinde, one of the persons who had seen the body, said the victim was found when people had gone to collect fodder for cattle in the area.
Some people whom I know went to the spot to bring fodder for cattle. They saw the body and informed me. We then informed the police. The body was in a charred state and the face was also burnt beyond recognition, said Shinde.
Said senior police inspector Bajirao Bhosale of Powai Police Station,After we received the call,we went to the spot near the pipeline located close to the Cabin Chowky in Bhandup (West). Her face was burnt and we still have not identified the victim. Bhosale said initial investigations have revealed that the victim may have been killed somewhere close to the area and the body may have been brought to the spot to be disposed.
Since the body is burnt,we have registered an offence under Section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons. There are many theories which we are considering at this juncture, said Bhosale.
The police are searching for womans relatives to establish her identity and then probe whether she had any enemies.
We are searching for all possible clues to ascertain the victims identity, added Bhosale.
