A woman was charred to death after a fire broke out on the second floor of an old residential building in Nagpada on Thursday. The victim has been identified as Amreen Qureshi, 26. Two others had inhalation burns and were rushed to JJ hospital, said fire brigade officials.
The fire broke out on the second floor of a four-storeyed building at Undrai street near JJ Hospital around 5 pm, said fire officials. A ‘Grade One’ alert call was received by the fire station around 5.15pm, following which the fire brigade sent four fire engines, three water tankers and an ambulance to the spot.
“The building is old and has a wooden structures and no fire safety norms in place. The cylinder was intact in the second floor house that was gutted, but we are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire. We managed to control the fire within 25 minutes, but the woman was already charred by the time we reached,” said Hemant Parab, divisional fire officer, Byculla fire station.
JJ Hospital dean Dr T P Lahane said three persons were brought to the hospital. “A 26-year-old woman was brought dead. Two others survived with inhalation burns,” he said.
A 67-year-old woman and 35-year-old man were admitted in the hospital’s casualty ward and were stable,
Accused slaps cop in court, booked
An accused, earlier arrested by Mahim police in an MCOCA case, was booked for slapping a constable in a court on Thursday. An FIR has been registered against Alam Ansari (25) at NM Joshi Marg police station as the Arthur Road court comes under its jurisdiction. Ansari was taken to the court for a hearing. Asif Naqvi, a lawyer, claimed that they heard him a commotion while the judge was hearing another case. “He told the judge that the cop had hit him outside court,” said Naqvi. ENS
