A 45-year-old woman was killed after a portion of a retaining wall collapsed on an adjoining residential structure in Kurla and came crashing on her on Friday afternoon. As per officials, no other injuries were reported in the mishap.
The incident was reported at 3.39 pm on Friday at A1 Gulab Baba society in Parera Wadi in Kurla’s Saki Naka area. According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident occurred after a retaining wall from a building collapsed atop a nearby ground-plus-one residential structure. One woman was injured in the incident who was rescued by locals and taken to the nearby Axone Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The deceased has been identified as Mangala Gaonkar (45).
Following the incident, the civic body mobilised its ward staffers while the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) and police officials also deployed its personnel on the spot.
The wall collapse struck amid heavy rainfall battering the city throughout Friday with data showing that the heaviest showers were recorded in the western suburbs which received an average of 61.47 mm rain, followed by an average of 48 mm rain in the eastern suburbs.
While officials maintained that no other wall or house collapse were reported in the city on Friday, at least six incidents of tree collapses and two cases of short circuits were reported between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm. Of the total incidents, the highest cases were reported in the western suburbs which received the maximum showers during the day.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, a minor fire was also reported in Borivali West’s 12-storey Dattani tower along the Kora Kendra road. Officials maintained that no injuries were reported in the blaze, which was doused within an hour and remained confined to electrical installation, wooden items and furnishings of one flat on the seventh floor of the high rise.
