A 35-year-old woman, who was hit by a train after being assaulted by a suspected robber on the Harbour Line between Ghansoli and Rabale stations, died Saturday. Aarti Gholapkar was admitted to Criticare Hospital in Thane. The woman was braindead for the past two days
The Railway Police have registered a complaint of murder.
Gholapkar,a resident of Dombivali, was standing on the footboard of a Thane-bound train when she was hit with a hooked stick by an unidentified man Thursday. When the woman fell off the train, the accused allegedly fled with jewellery and valuables worth Rs 26,000. Meanwhile, the woman lay unconscious on the tracks.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Harbour division) S T Malusare said,We have identified an accused who we believe was involved in a similar offence at the same spot a year ago, said Malusare.
The police have also picked up a history sheeter and are questioning him. However, there is no evidence that points towards his involvement in the attack on Gholapkar.
The investigation so far indicates that the accused was trying to snatch Gholapkars bag from her shoulder using the hooked stick while she was standing on the footboard. However,he ended up dragging her off her feet, said an officer with Vashi railway police.
The accused involved in these offences are only interested in snatching the belongings of footboard travellers. One side of the railway line is easily accessible from the highway parallel to the railway line. We believe that the accused came from the highway and fled in the same direction, added the officer.
The police said Gholapkars three colleagues, who were also on the same train, have said they frequently advised her not to travel on the footboard. However, she preferred travelling on it.
Gholapkars colleagues were aware of the incident that had occurred a year ago and would tell her to sit inside instead of standing at the door. However, she preferred to travel on the footboard so that she could get off the train fast, Malusare said.
