A 31-year-old woman allegedly drowned her month-old twins in a water drum at her New Panvel residence on Wednesday, police said.

They said between 3 pm and 4 pm on Wednesday,Shobha Sonar (31),a housewife who lives with her husband Deepak in Datta Kripa Housing Society, drowned her sons in a large plastic water drum. The infants were born on March 1,police said.

Shobha’s mother and mother-in-law were asleep at the time of the incident, police said. Deepak is a technician at a private firm in CBD Belapur. Shobha has been booked for murder.

Shobha reportedly told the police that she killed her children out of despair. “She has said she killed them as she couldn’t care and provide for them,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Pramod Shewale. The bodies have been sent to Panvel Municipal Hospital for postmortem.

Police said Shobha’s mother woke up around 5 pm and found the living room empty. Unable to find Shobha or the children, she went to the bathroom and saw Shobha sitting on the floor next to the water drum. When she did not respond to questions,Shobha’s mother looked inside the drum and saw one of the boys floating in it. She panicked and fished him out, only to find the other child, too, inside it.

Police said she called Deepak, who was at work, and also alerted neighbours. One of the neighbours informed Khandeshwar police.

Police said the family’s financial status was apparently sound, based on statements given by the family members. Police are probing if Shobha suffered from anxiety and are consulting experts. Shobha’s medical report was awaited, police said.
