A woman police officer was run over by a newspaper delivery van in the wee hours of Saturday on the Western Express Highway at Vakola, while she was conducting the punchnama of another accident that took place at the same spot, minutes ago.
The police said PSI Poonam Bhoi suffered a skull fracture and 20 per cent burn injuries. “Around 2.30 am, we received a call from the night patrolling constables that a Swift car had turned turtle after hitting the divider and another vehicle. The driver of the car had fled. After the call, Bhoi, who was on night duty left for the spot to conduct a punchnama of the accident. While Bhoi was examining the accident spot, the over-speeding van hit her,” said Vinayak Mule, senior police inspector of Vakola police station.
“Oil was spilled on the road from the previous accident due to which the driver of the newspaper delivery van lost control of the vehicle and hit Bhoi. She sustained 20 per cent burn injuries from the hot oil that fell on her. Her condition is critical,” Mule added. The Vakola police have arrested Akhilesh Yadav (40), the driver of the delivery van, for rash and negligent driving.
