Woman consumes chemical at police station,dies

A 37-year-old woman accused of theft allegedly consumed a chemical cleaning liquid at Samta Nagar police station in Kandivali East Saturday morning.

A 37-year-old woman accused of theft allegedly consumed a chemical cleaning liquid at Samta Nagar police station in Kandivali East Saturday morning. Police said she later died at a hospital.

Radha Hiwale,who worked as a domestic help in Kandivali East,was arrested from her home in Damu Nagar slum colony following a complaint by her employer,police said.

The employer claimed that Hiwale had stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 44,000 from the house. Police said Hiwale was under detention where she was allowed to phone her family. She called up her daughter and asked her to bring food as well as toilet cleaning fluid,an officer said.

“The daughter did as told. Hiwale,who was kept in the women’s cell,consumed the liquid at 10.20 am and began to vomit,” senior inspector Nanasaheb Kamble said.

She was taken to Bhagwati Hospital,police said. “She died at the hospital. Crime Branch will probe the case,” Kamble said.
