When the Fashion World Cheered

Notes from stylista.com’s party for Padma Shri Wendell Rodricks

Old friends and new came together for fashion e-retailer stylista.com’s celebratory toast for Wendell Rodricks, the legendary Mumbai-raised and Goa-based designer who was honoured with a Padma Shri award this year.

Rodricks and his disarming French partner Jerome Marrel flew in from Goa only hours before the party started, both in matching bandhgalas made by the designer. Hostess Anjana Sharma wore a bright floorsweeper from Wendell and matched it with her Charlize Theron-inspired blonde highlights.

One only had to scan the room full of designers to realise Rodricks’ fan following: there was Neeta Lulla (whose 50th birthday it was) and her daughter Nishka, Rodricks’ former student Masaba Gupta rocking the girl’s suit trend in red, Priyadarshini Rao and her husband Jaydeep Shetty, Yogesh Chowdhury, Nachiket Barve, and swimwear-makers Shivan and Narresh, among others. Models Candice Pinto, Carol Gracias and Deepti Gujral were also present. Rodricks’ forever-muse Malaika Arora Khan looked so glamorous in all-black with long glittering Gaga-style nails. “I’m so happy to be here, I don’t think I’ll ever fall out of love with the modelling world,” she said, even though she is now one of the most successful film producers.

A sneaky appearance was made by Shahab Durazi, the reclusive couturier who said he came only to give Wendell and Jerome a warm hug and left soon after.

Rodricks took the mic and made an impassioned speech saying he was always a fighter obsessed with doing the right thing. He said he fought with the Delhi fraternity for the Mumbai one and likewise, and he fought with both of them for the younger designers. Of course a loud cheer ensued, Rodricks is a hero after all. Only now he’s got the President of the country agreeing with him.

Worli restaurant 212 proved to be a stylish spot with its excellent food and DJ Asad Freeatmah
Zaidi’s music.
