With environmental concerns becoming a major priority in the city, the Western Railways (WR) is set to recycle water using reverse osmosis at its new state-of-the-art laundry in the city. The aim of this project is to save 1.15 lakh litres of water a day and reduce the burden of purchasing potable water. The WR also plans to install an RO plant or water cleaning system in its recently-introduced mega-laundry at Bandra terminus, where 6 tonne of linen are being washed for over 16 hours a day.
Already there is an effluent treatment plant. After the process of washing, the dirty water goes to a big tank, which has different chambers. Here, certain chemicals are added to neutralise the water so that it does not affect the environment.
“It is a costly affair but will prove to be very hygienic in the long run. We have set up such linen care centres in Ahmedabad, Indore, Junagarh and Surat as well. This specific laundry has three washer extractors, two tumbler dryers, three flat irons, two boilers, two compressors, one RCD installations for high-speed diesel storage and an effluent treatment plant,” said Arun Kumar Singh, senior coaching depot officer.
“In one shift, 13 workers are deputed for different works for cleaning and ironing three thousand bed rolls. Right now, only three tonne linen are being cleaned but hopefully from October , 6 tonnes of linen will be cleaned. However, this laundry has a capacity of cleaning 10 tonnes, but we do not want over use machines,” he added.
